No Room for Students: Closing the Rent Loophole That’s Driving Us Out

Last week, CUSA President Sean Joe-Ezigbo and Vice President Student Issues Aidan Kallioinen met with @cmckenneyndp to discuss the launch of CUSA’s new report: “No Room for Students: Closing the Rent Loophole That’s Driving Us Out.” The report focuses on the Residential Tenancies Act, and the mechanisms within it that enable a system of “Vacancy Decontrol” (Unregulated rent once a tenant moves out of a unit) across the province. This issue has a unique effect on students, who have far higher turnover rates when compared to other renters. In practice, this means students can end up paying up to 25% more for the same apartment, when compared with other renters.

CUSA is committed to working with our local MPP and provincial Housing Critic to address this system of unregulated rent gouging, and to champion a petition and press release before Queen’s Park addressing student concerns around the price of rent, and an existing lack of rent control across the province. Our new report is available by clicking here.
