CUSA Receives Recognition for Work on Rent Control Policy

On Sunday, January 11, CUSA’s President Sean Joe-Ezigbo and Vice President Student Issues Aidan Kallioinen attended a New Year’s Levee hosted by Member of Provincial Parliament for Ottawa Centre Catherine McKenney. At the levee, CUSA was grateful to receive recognition for its work on rent control advocacy, specifically it’s report titled “No Room for Students: Closing the Rent Loophole That’s Driving Us Out.”

CUSA’s report calls on the Government of Ontario to reinstitute a system of vacancy control across the province, in a bid to restore rent fairness for student tenants, who are uniquely susceptible to rent raises when they move repeatedly. The report further calls on the province to eliminate the post-2018 rent control exemptions for new builds, disproportionately impacting students living in new developments or subject to “demovictions.”

CUSA is grateful for MPP McKenney’s recognition and tremendous support in preparing this report and advocating for affordable housing for students across Ontario.
