Statement of Solidarity: Standing With Those Impacted by the Crisis in the Dominican Republic

The Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA), in partnership with the Carleton University Human Rights Society (CUHRS), stands in unwavering solidarity with all those affected by the racialized violence and humanitarian crisis currently unfolding in the Dominican Republic.

We unequivocally condemn the mass deportations, arbitrary detentions, and racial profiling of Haitian migrants, Black Dominicans, and others facing state-sanctioned discrimination. These actions violate international law and reflect a long-standing legacy of anti-Black racism and systemic injustice.

We acknowledge the fear, grief, and trauma that these events may cause, particularly among Black, Haitian, Dominican, and Caribbean students in our community. We reaffirm our commitment to human rights, racial justice, and amplifying the voices of those most impacted.

We call on Carleton University to:
• Publicly denounce the crisis and affirm its commitment to anti-racism and global justice;
• Offer legal and immigration support through the ISSO to students impacted by the crisis;
• Expand mental health services that are trauma-informed and culturally responsive to the needs of racialized students.

We encourage students to seek support and remain informed. Below are community and campus-based resources available to you.
