About Foot Patrol

Foot Patrol is a student-operated, student-run, and volunteer-based service centre. We provide safe walks, the Walk and Talk service, event safety support through the Guardian program, and the Borrow a First Aid Kit service to the Carleton community. Foot Patrollers operate in pairs, and all volunteers are required to obtain a police record check in the vulnerable sector and complete a Foot Patrol training session prior to joining. Foot Patrol also patrols campus, promotes safety awareness, and offers a variety of additional services and initiatives to the Carleton community. All of our services are free.

Prefer not to walk with two volunteers? Off-campus in a sketchy neighbourhood? Call Foot Patrol’s Walk and Talk line at (613) 520-4449 from 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM seven days a week and a volunteer will stay on the phone with you until you reach your destination.

Foot Patrol teams can be booked for on and off-campus events. For small (usually on-campus) events, a Foot Patrol team can attend or drop by at specific intervals during an event’s duration to offer safe walks, as requested by event organizers.
For larger (usually off-campus) events, Foot Patrol’s Guardian Program can provide event planning, organizational, and safety related advice to event organizers if desired (we’ve been to a lot of events, we can advise on what works/doesn’t), support and direction to attendees, and help ensure all individuals return home safely.

The type of team that attends an event is discussed beforehand, and we work to accommodate the organizer’s needs as much as possible. Guardian team members are selected from Foot Patrol volunteers who have shown the greatest degree of commitment, responsibility, and ability to remain focused in stressful situations. Guardian teams can be requested to wear professional or casual dress and all Guardian volunteers are Standard First Aid and CPR/AED C trained. Please note that Foot Patrol Guardian teams are not to be used to replace security or a dedicated medical first responder team and will not physically intervene in confrontational situations.

A Foot Patrol or Guardian event team can be booked without charge by organizers of any event involving Carleton students (it does not need to be an official event occurring through Carleton University). The event does not need to occur during our operational hours. We request that organizers contact us a week in advance if they wish to book an event team. We will do our best to accommodate requests on shorter notice but cannot guarantee our attendance.

Organizing an event, a trip, or a personal outing? Don’t have a first aid kit to bring with you? Foot Patrol offers first aid kits to any Carleton University student or group that wants to borrow one.
You can choose between the small, car, standard, daypack, compact, and survival backpack kits, each with a different inventory and size to match your needs. To sign out a kit, please contact the Foot Patrol office via email at footpatrol@cusaonline.ca, give us a call during our operational hours, or drop by our office in person in the evening! All we require is a $10 or $20 deposit depending on the kit you choose (this can be waived in exceptional circumstances) and for you to fill out a quick form. We don’t charge for any used supplies, all we ask is that you return the kit itself in the same condition as you acquired it on or before the agreed upon return date!

Foot Patrol is committed to providing you with the tools to ensure your event proceeds safely, so don’t hesitate to borrow a first aid kit! After all, safety is everyone’s business.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) Courses

Foot Patrol organizes semesterly ASIST courses for the Carleton community, taught by Breanna Pizzuto and Jenny Jackson from Talk Tools Training.

CUSA First Aid Kit Restock

Foot Patrol audits and restocks all CUSA first aid kits on a bi-annual basis, ensuring all CUSA service centres, offices, and other spaces always have a stocked and accessible first aid kit.

Safety Surveys

Foot Patrol completes semesterly safety surveys of the interior and exterior of Carleton University, reporting hazards and other safety issues to Carleton’s Joint Health and Safety Committee, Facilities Management and Planning, and Campus Safety Services through a comprehensive, itemized list.

Please note that Carleton’s Joint Health and Safety Committee is primarily responsible for ensuring the safety of Carleton’s campus. Foot Patrol conducts our semesterly safety survey to provide a student-oriented perspective of campus conditions, using our volunteer base to identify and raise awareness of a variety of potential hazards.

Swag

Foot Patrol distributes a variety of visibility, safety, and school related supplies and informational materials with the support of our partners at Safer Roads Ottawa and DrinkSmart. Interested in a mini-first aid kit, snap on visibility bracelets, or some extra highlighters? Drop by our office in the evening! Please note that available items may change over time.

All of Foot Patrol’s programs are made possible by a dedicated team of volunteers. Interested in joining our team? Fill out our volunteer contract, and drop by our office during our operational hours! Volunteers are also expected to obtain a police record check in the vulnerable sector, and we’ll provide you with the form to obtain one free of charge. You’ll also be able to ask any questions you may have!

If you aren’t available during our operating hours, send us an email at footpatrol@cusaonline.ca, and we’ll be happy to schedule a meeting!
