After a teaser launch yesterday, CUSA’s ‘The Spot’ officially opened its doors to students today.
“It’s a Student Life Centre” said Adil Tahseen, Vice-President Student Services – who passionately advocated for the centre as part of his electoral campaign during the winter 2014 semester.
“It has all those things that students have told us they’ve been missing around campus. Microwaves, charging stations. It also acts as a secondary CUSA office. The main office often gets packed when we are selling tickets to events on top of providing our usual services. At The Spot, students will be able to buy tickets to events, get updated on campus services, get help with their health plan coverage, and check out our CUSA Swag Shop!”
In addition to the features highlighted above, The Spot which is located at 302 University Centre also has a laptop charger loaner program, a lounge area and will also be adding printing services in the coming week. “Cheaper printing is a probably one of the most integral services The Spot will provide. Printing in the library can add up quickly and running all the way to the back end of campus can be annoying. So having cheaper – more centrally located printing, is something I’m sure students will love!” said Tahseen.
The Spot’s centralized location is also expected to drive traffic to other the CUSA Service Centres located on the 3rd floor of the University Centre. “Location is important” said Folarin Odunayo, CUSA President. “Most of our Service Centres are split between the 4th and 3rd floor of the University Centre. The centres by the main CUSA office on the 4th floor get a lot of traffic, hopefully having The Spot by ASC (Aboriginal Service Centre), BECAMPS (Bill Ellis Centre for Mature and Part-time Students), the Health and Wellness (Resource) Centre, REC Hall (Race and Ethnicity Hall) and the Womyn’s Centre will encourage students to check out the other services CUSA provides.”
The Spot is not just about highlighting the services offered by CUSA. The centre will also host staff from the University’s Co-op and Career Services as well as the Student Academic Success Centre (SASC), 3 days a week to provide students with resume building and academic support.
“The university offers a lot of great services that are often over looked. We saw an opportunity with The Spot to bring these services to the forefront of campus is a new and exciting way” said Tahseen.
Students seem to be enjoying the new Student Life Centre. During the soft opening yesterday, more than 100 students showed up to collect some free CUSA Swag from Tahseen after a picture was tweeted out from The Spot’s Twitter account (@CUSATheSpot), inviting students to check out the centre.
“The feedback has been great so far” said Tahseen. “Students are excited. The one thing I heard a lot yesterday was, ‘Why didn’t someone think of this before?’ It seems like we’ve hit the nail on the head with The Spot. It’s a space and a collection of services students have wanted for a while and I’m happy to bring it to them this year as Vice-President Student Services.”
The Spot is open Monday to Friday from 10-7! To check out some of the other services offered by CUSA, visit the website at www.cusaonline.ca
