You don’t want to miss these 10 essential Carleton experiences

It’s our favorite time of year: time to welcome a brand new crop of students to campus! In the spirit of fall orientation, we’ve put together a series called #FirstYearQuestions to help you find out everything you want to know about the school before you even get to campus.

This week we answer all your burning questions about campus events – What is there? Which ones do I make sure I hit up? What are they like? – with our list of essential experiences.

Do you have #FirstYearQuestions to ask? Post them on the campus feed on CUSA Hub and we’ll answer them in an upcoming post. Plus, posting a question on CUSA Hub enters you for a chance to win $250 and a CUSA prize pack! That’s right – free money just for asking a question.
1) Fall Orientation

Carleton Fall Orientation
Canal games, team cheers and whole lot of pizza are all important parts of your initiation into Carleton student life. The bonds you form in frosh could very well become lifelong friendships, so you don’t want to miss this chance to meet a ton of people and scream your lungs out together. Wtf is a Gee-Gee anyway?

2) Thirsty Thursday

CUSA Thirsty Thursday
Every Thursday Oliver’s Pub and Patio transforms into the city’s best dance party, complete with awesome DJs and all your friends. Plus, this year you can get psyched for the return of Drake Night, as well as the brand new Beiber night. It’s a Carleton tradition that you don’t want to miss out on.

3) Panda Game

Panda game
There’s nothing quite like the crowd at the Panda Game. The cross-town rivalry between the city’s two university football teams is legendary, going back sixty years and involving – among other things – a panda-napping, a local jeweler, and various acts of petty vandalism. The annual game at TD Place is always a nail-biter, and when we win you definitely want to be part of the stream of Ravens storming the field to celebrate.

4) Study snacks

CUSA study snacks
Exam time is always brutal – of course- but there’s also something about it that unites Carleton students. We all know the stress, the late nights, and the last minute cramming; it’s all part of the student experience. So whether you’re doing your first all-nighter at MacOdrum or your fiftieth, we’ve got you covered with delicious free snacks every night in the University Centre. It’s a great chance to take a break and bond with your fellow library warriors.

5) Homecoming

Carleton homecoming
Homecoming is still a relatively new event at Carleton – this will be its fourth year – but it’s quickly becoming an institution on campus. There’s something really special about repping the red and black alongside alumni of all ages. Plus, the parties are already the stuff of legends.

6) The International Students Gala

CUSA international students gala
Students often assume this annual event is just for international students, but that’s a myth; the International Students’ Gala is for everyone. It’s a big, international party celebrating our school’s diverse peoples and cultures, complete with a ton of really sick cultural performances, food, and dancing. There’s a lot of galas on campus every year, but none quite like this one.

7) Therapy dogs

CUSA therapy animals
Because who doesn’t feel more relaxed after chilling with an adorable furry therapist? Every time we bring in therapy animals to campus, they’re wildly popular, so keep an eye out throughout the year for therapy animal days in our offices.

8) Capital Hoops

Carleton Capital Hoops
Even if you’re not into basketball, you’re definitely going to want to cheer on our unreal men’s basketball team – twelve time CIS champs. And what better game to get psyched for than another capital city rivalry game? Both schools bring busloads of fans to the Canadian Tire Centre every January to rep their team.

9) Relay for Life

Carleton University relay for life
Not only is it the biggest fundraiser on campus, but it’s also an incredibly fun, can’t-miss event. All the major clubs, societies, departments, and Greek groups enter teams in this 24 hour relay in the fieldhouse. Most people come to support the cause, but stay for all the fun activities. Even if you’re not involved in a club that’s going, you can enter a team of your friends.

10) Ravens Gala

CUSA Ravens Gala
Whether you’re graduating or you’re just psyched that you made it through first year, Ravens Gala is the perfect chance to dress to the nines and celebrate. Eat, drink, and dance at this annual celebration of achievement, both academic and extracurricular.
