About Foot Patrol

Foot Patrol is a student operated, student run, and volunteer based service centre. We provide safe walks and the Walk and Talk service for the Carleton community, as well as event safety support through the Guardian program, and the Borrow a First Aid Kit service. Foot Patrollers operate in pairs, and all volunteers are required to obtain a police record check in the vulnerable sector and complete a Foot Patrol training session prior to joining. Foot Patrol also patrols Carleton, promotes safety awareness, and conducts bi-annual safety audits of campus. All our services are free.
Safe Walk Program
If you’re uncomfortable with being escorted by two Foot Patrol volunteers in uniform, we can still help. Just ask us for a plainclothes safe walk, and we’ll remove our vests and utility belt.
Walk and Talk Program
Foot Patrol Event Team/Guardian Program
For larger (usually off-campus) events, Foot Patrol’s Guardian Program is commonly used (which type of team attends your event is discussed with the event organizers beforehand, and we work to accommodate your needs as much as possible). Guardian teams provide planning and organizational advice to event organizers, support and direction to attendees, and help ensure all individuals return home safely.
Guardian teams possess a professional dress code, will take a more active role in event planning, organization, and providing safety related advice if desired, and are selected from Foot Patrol volunteers who have shown the greatest degree of commitment and responsibility. Please note that Foot Patrol Guardian teams are not to be used as security, and will not physically intervene in confrontational situations.
A Foot Patrol or Guardian event team can be booked without charge by organizers of any event involving Carleton students (it does not need to be an official event occurring through Carleton University). The event does not need to occur during our operational hours. We request that organizers contact us a week in advance if they wish to book an event team (we will do our best to accommodate requests on shorter notice, but cannot guarantee anything).
Borrow a First Aid Kit
You can choose between the small, car, standard, survival, compact, and pack/backpack kits, each with a different inventory and size to match your need. For more details regarding the contents of a kit or to sign out a kit, please contact the Foot Patrol office via email, give us a call during our operational hours, or drop by in person! All we require is a $10 or $20 deposit depending on the kit you choose (this can be waived in exceptional circumstances) and for you to fill out a quick form. We don’t charge for any used supplies, all we ask is that you return the kit itself in the same condition as you acquired it on or before the agreed upon return date!
Foot Patrol is committed to providing you with the tools to ensure your event proceeds safely, so don’t hesitate to borrow a first aid kit! After all, safety is everyone’s business.
